Cover design is the number 1 key to marketing success for indie authors.

Cover design is the most important part of book marketing for indie authors. I’ve talked before about the importance of cover design when it comes to marketing your book—it seems to be a topic of endless discussion when it comes to self-publishing—and I’d like to touch on it again with a real world example of the importance of cover design.

In case you’re new to the self-publishing game; a good cover will make or break your sales. I had a terrible cover on my first book and the sales to match, but I turned all that around when I put on a more professional cover and I’m not the only author who has seen the difference a good cover can bring.

James Rosone and his wife Miranda Watson experienced similar results with their excellent series, The Monroe Doctrine. Fans of technothrillers with gripping real-world implications would do well to check out these books. The Monroe Doctrine follows a cast of believable characters on a terrifyingly plausible lead up to World War III. Be prepared to lose sleep at night!

As a reader, I can tell you the books are solid, but the original cover design left a lot to be desired. After some initial sales that were less than exhilarating, James and Miranda decided to spring for shiny new covers and the results speak for themselves. Cover design is the key to marketing success for indie authors!

The Monroe Doctrine has been dominating the technothriller categories since the launch of the new covers and the series doesn’t show any signs of slowing down anytime soon!

I was able to sit down with James recently. We discussed all things self-publishing and he credits much of their success on the Monroe series to the updated cover design. And I have to say, I agree. The new design does a good job tying the series together while making the books pop on Amazon.

The first thing a reader will see of your book is the cover. Cover design is the billboard that will sell your book. If it’s not on point, all the advertising dollars in the world will do you no good. So take your time, shell out a little extra money and make sure this aspect of your marketing is working for you, not against you.
