Resources for Indie Authors

The authors and editors of Literary Rebel have put together a list of essential tools and resources for indie authors. We’ve spent years figuring out the game. We made a lot of mistakes along the way and wasted a lot of time and money. Thankfully we finally learned to build successful author platforms. But we didn’t do it alone. We had a lot of help along the way.  Now we want to help other authors just like us.

Self-publishing can be brutal. If you want to succeed, you need the right tools. That’s what this page is all about. We will update it periodically to bring you the latest websites and tools used by the top independent authors in the world today.

Books Every Author Should Read

Stephen King’s On Writing is worth the cost of a semester at an ivy league school. His hippy politics aside, this book is perfect for the beginner and the seasoned professional as well. King has a way of laying out the basics of writing fiction that make it easy to grasp. His book is both accessible and deep. Pick up a copy and get a highlighter handy.

Most guides to writing fiction are penned by literary authors like John Gardner and Donald Maas. While those guides to writing fiction are not necessarily bad, they are aimed at literary authors and people that want to write the kind of high-brow literature that high school kids dread to see on their reading lists. Lessons from a Lifetime Writing is written by none other than the creator of Rambo. This guy knows a thing or two about creating memorable characters and action packed stories. It’s also a pretty entertaining biography from a man’s man. This guy knows his stuff and you could do worse than to learn from him.

Walter Mosley is one of the greatest crime novelists around today. His book, designed to help you write a first draft in a year, is packed full of great essays on everythign from plotting to writing dialoge. It is a short book. You can read through it in one setting, and it’s probalby hands down one of the best works on the craft of writing. Pick a copy up today.
